Proofmeter replacement with Electronic Tachometer

I am looking to replace my proofmeter with an electronic Tachometer/Hour meter. Looking through the archives there are several suggestions for meters but no discussion on how or where to place the sensor. In my case I have an 851 diesel so can not use an inductive (spark plug wire) sensor. I think I read that it is possible to sense the alternator voltage (ripple?). That and flywheel magnets seem unreliable to me but I have no experience here.

I was thinking of fabricating something to attach to the proofmeter cable drive at the hydraulic pump but can not find any information on the drive RPM to engine RPM ratio. That appears to be transmission dependent, the 851 is a five speed transmission.

Have any of you successfully adapted an electronic rpm gauge to a diesel engine?

An alternator tap would be the easiest, however most common alternators such as the Delco 10SI don't have the appropriate AC
tap necessary for a tachometer to work.

If that's the case, I would drill and tap the flywheel housing for either 5/8" or 3/4" fine thread and screw in a commercially
available speed sensor to count ring gear teeth. Once you figure out just how many teeth are on the ring gear, it's a simple
matter to program the tach.

Check ebay, they do have 10si alternators with electronic tach terminal. Match with electronic sensing tach with hour meter. I'm in the middle of doing the same thing with a Case 188 diesel.

Perhaps I am over thing this as usual. I think I will look into modifying my existing alternator to provide a compatible signal. I am hoping to find a meter that will fit the existing panel opening, about 3 3/8 or 85mm. There are several online that size and they are fairly inexpensive.

Thanks for the suggestions.
