CNH parts - the ripoff continues

My friend asks me to re-seal the PS box on his 4000. "No problem" I say, "I've done dozens of them". I go to order parts from the local NH dealer, and get ready to order the major seal kit along with the other individual o-rings the kit doesn't come with. Lo and behold I see that NH now offers a new kit, which is essentially the original kit along with all the other pieces I used to order individually. "Great!" I think to myself, "I'll get that".

Like a dummy I didn't bother to price the kit. I order it, and a few days later go in to pick it up. I'm shocked when I see the price - $310 - yikes!! I ask the parts guy if any of the seals are gold-plated. He looks up the contents and tells me that he suspects that said kit covers all the different models, 4000-7000. I say "Yah, whatever".

I call the customer and ask him if he wants to return them and go to "plan B". He says "No, just go ahead and get them, you're there now". He also said "This is why I'm slowly converting all of my tractors to John Deere".

I get it home and open it up to what you see below. You can see the major kit (EGPN3N503AA), along with the individual o-rings and felt seals in...get this...bags of 10 each! And the cover gasket in a bag of 2. I could hardly believe it.

Lesson learned. I will never order so much as a cotter pin from CNH without pricing it first. AND asking if I'm getting one or a bag of 50 at a buck a piece!

Thats no surprise. Getting to be an issue at a bunch of dealers.

Local Deere dealer, ordered something small, it was inexpensive. Didnt check when I was at the counter. When I got home it was a bag of 5. A lot of these parts guys arent paying attention too the contents sometimes. Theyre supposed to take the bag of 5, sell you 1 and put 4 in stock most times.

Thing is, this wasn't the dealer who did that, it was CNH! The parts catalog specifically states the callout numbers of the
parts in the kit. What it doesn't say is that every item listed is in bags of 10!

Haha. Trust me, after I figure out what those o-rings cost per unit, and then add my personal markup, you won't be able to afford them! :)

Do you believe it is reasonable to expect a dealer to sell only a single special order small item that the dealer does not normally stock when CNH supplies the item only in multiple unit packages?

There's lots of small parts like that... nuts, bolts, o-rings, etc. that partspring.com has only sold in bags of multiple units for a long time now. Most of them could be had individually from Messicks.com though, and the price of the individual parts from Messicks was always a very small markup from the bulk price from partspring.

Yes... I expect the dealer to sell me exactly what I need. And not charge me shipping when he is already charging full list price. I go to a dealer parts department expecting to buy parts at full price, IN STOCK. I do not expect to go there and pay full price PLUS pay for shipping on top of that. AND... they refuse to ship to my home. So, that is why I buy from folks like MessicKs as they do exactly that. AND... I only buy from the dealer the few time aftermarket parts are not available. The aftermarket parts availability is also why I dont buy JD or Kubota or even newer NH tractors.

oops I think you were being sarcastic... sorry.

No, I would not expect a dealer to do that - I completely understand your point. However, there is no reason that the corporate CNH parts system cannot make up 10 seal kits at a time, and put one o-ring of each size in each individual kit. They did it in the EGPN3N503AA kit, why can't they do that with this one? Simply to justify their exorbitant price?

My post above was directed to MikeJM, above.

That said, convenience is not free. Nor is packaging, inventory, and distribution. The cost of procuring small parts is a VERY small part of the total cost of marketing (making available) such parts and is dwarfed by the other costs associated with marketing such. Each individual part number that is marketed has such associated costs and adding part numbers, e.g., seal kit for X, seal kit for Y, seal kit for Z, etc., adds all of the associated costs yet again for each such part number.

I, myself, am thankful that as many parts for older machinery remain available as are even though the price of such parts at my local dealer may seem high, even excessive.

CNH is a business and the parts system is a profit center. If the parts system does not make a profit, it will cease to exist. I would find such result much worse than the system as is today.

When I go to get individual orings from cih the parts guy pulls most of them from bags. There are some individually bagged. Then I have to figure out what the loose ones are when I get home.

The CNH demise is all but final. CNH doesn't give a rat's-a$$ about vintage FORD tractors. The name FORD TRACTOR had been completely dissolved by 1992. New Holland has for the post 10 years or so been emphasizing THEIR tractors and equipment pushing the old stuff aside. I went to my local CNH dealer a few months ago to buy some 8N points and an oil washer/seal and they both came up with numbers not listed. Huh? I bought can of FORD red spray paint and it said "...used on all FORD TRACTORS -39-62..." Huh? I don't waste my time with CNH anymore. They have gone the same route as TSC and Fastenal in my book -worthless, overpriced, hardware stores, and I won't patronize them.

Same with all manufacturers.

Businesses must make a profit to remain in business and there is little profit to be made by a manufacturer in vintage tractor parts.

I remain thankful that as many parts remain available as do.

Ever go to a Chevrolet, Ford or Chrysler dealer and try to buy a part for a 60-80 year old car?

Deere still supplies an amazing amount of parts for their 50+ year old tractors. At least they haven't completely walked away from the 4020 like NH has done on the 5000.
