My friend asks me to re-seal the PS box on his 4000. "No problem" I say, "I've done dozens of them". I go to order parts from the local NH dealer, and get ready to order the major seal kit along with the other individual o-rings the kit doesn't come with. Lo and behold I see that NH now offers a new kit, which is essentially the original kit along with all the other pieces I used to order individually. "Great!" I think to myself, "I'll get that".
Like a dummy I didn't bother to price the kit. I order it, and a few days later go in to pick it up. I'm shocked when I see the price - $310 - yikes!! I ask the parts guy if any of the seals are gold-plated. He looks up the contents and tells me that he suspects that said kit covers all the different models, 4000-7000. I say "Yah, whatever".
I call the customer and ask him if he wants to return them and go to "plan B". He says "No, just go ahead and get them, you're there now". He also said "This is why I'm slowly converting all of my tractors to John Deere".
I get it home and open it up to what you see below. You can see the major kit (EGPN3N503AA), along with the individual o-rings and felt seals in...get this...bags of 10 each! And the cover gasket in a bag of 2. I could hardly believe it.
Lesson learned. I will never order so much as a cotter pin from CNH without pricing it first. AND asking if I'm getting one or a bag of 50 at a buck a piece!
