Ford 1500 glow plugs

Hello guys. Picked up my new to me ford 1500 with the 2 cylinder nippon diesel. The guy started it with ether.

He explained the glow plug setup to me. When I got home it wouldn't start. When I turn the switch to the left, the white dash light comes on but I hold a minute and never see anything glowing in the indicator. Went back to the ether to get it off the trailer.

Been reading up in the archives. Think I can test the glow plugs ok and may just go ahead and buy new ones. However, from what I read, the circuit runs through the indicator first so if it isn't working then nothing else will. Not sure how to get it out if that is the problem.

Read that Bosch duratherm plugs are the best and to wire them in series. But if I need to replace the indicator where can I get one as well as the plugs? I see that Oreillys has the NGK plugs and the champion brand.

And for a dumb question, is it the CaseIH dealer that handles the Ford tractors since they are part of New Holland? Going to be driving by the dealer later today if that is correct. Thanks.

The indicator will not light if there is an open circuit between that and the glow plugs. You can check it with a volt meter or test light to see if there is power going to it and coming out the other side. Then check to see if you have power going to the glow plugs. The glow plugs can be tested with an ohm meter. The CaseIH dealer may or may not have access to the parts as Ford parts are now through New Holland which is a different dealer agreement even though they are both part of CNH.

You are making a smart move in getting the glow plug system repaired. Ether is death for those little engines. I
would not use it at all. I have replaced several of those engines and you can hardly find them anymore.

I will see if I can unscrew the signal glow light to see if that wire is burnt out. Guess if there is voltage at the plugs then it should be ok. Will check and pull the plugs this evening. Read about testing them with jumper cables to see if they glow the full length.

Then get some 15w40 synthetic and change the oil. Need to decide what hydraulic fluid as I've read different things about what to use with dry clutches. Found the service manual online, now need to find the operators manual. Can't figure out what the shifting sequence is with two transmissions. Thanks.

It does make a higher pitch running noise compared to a big diesel. Will make a video and post it. Maybe it needs a glass pack muffler.

Ok. Found wire in signal indicator burnt through. Was going to hot wire it but pulled the plugs first. Looks like the ends are burnt off. One had a little residue in the hole that I think I can pick it out.

Need to trace the wiring. The signal indicator wires going in and out looked like 12 or 10 guage. The wire coming from under the dash around the regulator going to the plugs was 14 or 16 guage. There was a heavier wire just laying nearby loose that had a similar connector on it.

No dealer or parts store around here stocks this stuff so I have a couple glow plugs and the glow plug signal indicator wire on order which may not get here till the end of the month. The new indicators don't have the screw top to fit into the hole in the dash so I will just transfer the wire over.

After looking at the schematic I see that the indicator wires go from and then back to the key switch before then going on to the glow plugs. This allows the indicator to be removed from the circuit and still allow the glow plugs to get juice before when it is switched to the starter.

Got a download of the manual and see that the throttle needs to be on wide open to start it.
