640 Under belly ID/use

New to the tractor world. but recently picked up a 1954 640. While changing the coffee and creamer they called "hydraulic fluid", I noticed some panels or ports under the belly. I
was looking to get some info on these like what they are, what I can do with them, what I need/don't need to do with them, ect.
I'm also curious to know if there are extra hydraulic ports on the 640. Any and all info is welcomed. Thanks!

PS. It does have an 801 grille and I believe a 4000 bumper. Would love to find a 600 grille for it.

The square opening in your picture should have a cover plate with a hole in the center of it. The hole should have a cotter pin in it to rattle around and keep the hole open. It's purpose is to let any oil leaking drain out and not soak the clutch and ruin it. The odd shaped plate is the pump relief valve cover. Is 105091 the serial number of your tractor? If it is, your tractor is a 1957 640. If it was a 1954 it would have a large nut in the center of the rear wheels but yours are smooth. You are correct about your hood, it is from an 801 series. A correct grill may not mount directly to the 801 hood sheetmetal, you may have to do a little fabrication to mount the bottom of the correct 640 grill. Your front bumper is from a later model 3 cyl Ford. It is very similar to the X01 series bumper, but the top bar on the later 3 cyl bumper has a bigger space between the top bar and second bar. The X01 series bumper has the same space between all three bars.

Thanks for the reply. Can you elaborate on the pump relief valve cover? What is that used for?
You may be correct on the serial number. But it could be hard to tell also. I think my rear section isn't original. I say this because of the arm you can see just behind the pump relief valve cover. It looks like the right brake arm from a N tractor? I find a lot of blue under the red paint on the rear section too.

The relief valve is part of the hydraulics for the three point hitch. You shouldn't have to mess with it unless you are having issues with the three point hitch. To add additional hydraulics to your tractor, a valve can be added just in front of the seat by removing the flat plate found there. Did you remove the square plate from under your tractor before you took your picture, or is it missing? In your picture, it appears that you may be missing some of the brake linkage. Do your brakes work? Ford tractors were painted blue from the factory starting in the sixties. 50 years is a lot of time for parts to get swapped, painted, etc, so anything is possible with the blue paint on your tractor.
