Have an 841 that is always hard to start, runs pretty smooth when it does run, doesnt matter if it is 80 degrees or 10.
It seems to flood out right away pull a spark plug and is wet with fuel.
Things that have been done to this tractor:
12v conversation
New distributer with pentronix electronic ignition
Flame thrower coil
Autolite 437 plugs
Replacement zenith carborator
Compession test 115,115,105,115
New battery
Has strong spark
It cranks over but does not seem to fire, I end up using starting fluid

Have you checked and set the ignition timing?

Other than that, I'd be looking at the carburetor. There are adjustments to be made. Aftermarket carbs get mixed reviews. Zenith brand should be a quality unit if you're sure you didn't get a knock-off.

Pull the air intake tube to the carb before trying to start. If a fuel puddle, bad float valve or float.
Been down this path with two 172,

when I fire it up next I will check timming. I udes a light and the mark on the flywheel set it to whatever the manual said.
It is a real zenith carb I will admit when I put it on I didn't adjust anything. Any guidance on what I should be adjusting?

Idle speed stop.
Idle fuel mixture.
Power Mixture.

I spent the money for a color tune spark plug. It has a glass top so you can see the combustion flame. Takes just a minute to set the idle mixture. Power mixture you want to
put it on a load. Silo blower, generator or dynometer. Too lean a power mixture and you will have a burned valve.
