ford 3000 PTO

I just pulled the PTO to replace seal, that went well, in putting the pto back in it would not go, looked up
into back of housing and there is looks to be a gear hanging down where the PTO slides into the trans, what
happened, PTO came out nice and smooth

Sounds like you have a twin stick model.
Also sounds like you don't have a manual.
I&T FO-31 says on twin stick models to engage pto handle before pulling the shaft or the splined coupler will fall out of place. Remove the cover the pto handle goes through to put the coupler back in place.
