3910 leaking at the steering column

I bought this 3910 new in 85 and we have fixed the steering
column about 4or 5 times and it is those four neoprene seals
inside there y’all know btdt anyway I finally decided oil was
too cheap and just let er leak just put oil in it and keep going
has anybody had any luck fixing these I think they are on just
certain years can get a new column and change it back to the
old style from Alexander tractor if anybody can give me some
advice that will be greatly appreciated

I'd be trying to figure out why it leaks, rather than trying to convert it. There are plenty of those steering boxes out there that don't leak. Are you damaging the seals putting them in?

I don’t think so we made a clamp to put around em when putting them in I think the dealership done it a couple of times

No it wasn’t we heated the rings in hydraulic oil to expand em
so they will go on does anybody know the proper way to do it

At the bottom of the steering tube there is a brass bearing (part 6 on the parts list in the link) that works its way out when you use the steering wheel to help you climb onto the tractor. It gets pressed in from the top and requires a tube that fits over the steering shaft and inside the steering tube. With this bearing missing or displaced the seal cannot seal against the shaft that keeps moving. It is unlikely that you can see this brass bearing by looking down the tube but if it is loose like mine was it will fall out when you turn the tube upside down.

What are you using for a clamp? If you use a hose clamp directly, you are likely cutting the seals. I wrap a few turns of electrical tape around them first when I do it. Never had a problem that way.

My 4610 did that and I replaced the oil filter in the steering pump reservior and it hasn"t done it since.
