172 thermostat placement, in or out

I went through 7 pages of archives. I forgot which way they go. Into the head or the neck?

The brass pellet (the sensing bulb) goes into the head.

Caution!! be sure that the 'stat is securely in the groove in the head before tightening the pipe over it.

I looked in that minimum manual and found nothing. I went to my Ford manual in the house and found the spring toward the block. I just went out there in the dark. The groove is much easier to see with a light in the dark. Thanks for the help and y'all have a good year.

On getting the stat in the groove, was working on a Ford car as a late teen or early daddy and tried but apparently missed getting it in there. When I torqued the 2 cover screws, the ear on that side that was raised snapped off.......yeah I was wrong but that was a sorry cast iron sand casting.
