My brother has recently purchased his second 6000, non running gas engine but supposedly good trans, his other one has a non working SOS with good diesel engine. Plan is to make one good tractor from the two, Both have been setting for a few years so I mentioned we should probably do a reseal on the SOS.
I am familiar with the SOS trans but haven't been inside one for 20 years and that one was in a later 3 cylinder 4000.

Having read about some of you work on the 6000 you restored I was hoping to get some advice on things to do and where to source parts for these old machines

Any help would be appreciated.

The 6000 trans is really no different than the 4000 you worked on 20 years ago. So, if you were successful on that one, there's
no reason you couldn't be successful with the 6000. That said, why assume that you need to go through it? Unless the insides
were exposed to moisture, I don't see how the simple passage of time would damage anything.

If it were me, I'd drain the oil, remove the screen, and make a decision about whether or not to tear into it. If everything
looked clean inside, and the input shaft splines are decent, the only thing I would do is install a new front pump seal, and
then adjust the bands after I got it running.

The parts situation is tough. The last SOS I overhauled was out of a 5000. The owner (Tim - dopp creek) spent almost as much
time finding parts as I did wrenching on it. He eventually found a guy back in England that has (or had) a stash of good used
parts. I suspect Tim might chime in here with some more info on that.

I remember you working on the 5000 SOS but didn't know if you have done anything to the one in the 6000.
I was concerned about some of the seals getting hard causing it not to work properly, my 801 had set for 20 years, cleaned the screen and changed to fluid but it was slow to lock the bands for park and at times in low idle 1st reverse would stop pulling after a few moments like it was going to neutral, shift to another gear and then back and it would work again.
Wasn't sure if there was any difference in the 6000 trans from the direct drive 801 models and later 3,4000 trans.
I have a 5000 SOS trans and axle in my parts junk pile, input shaft splines were bad.

It all depends on what you need, but generally the stuff is out there, and as Bern said , it takes some hunting. O-rings are easy, some gaskets were hard to find but you can make those if need be. I created a spreadsheet for all the parts we used in the 5000 SOS repair and I included interchanges and dimensions where I could. Let me know if I can help.

Ok thanks, I'll keep that in mind
Haven't done a parts list comparison to see what parts will interchange, he also has two 671 diesels with bad input shafts but we picked up a C3NN direct drive SOS that is supposed to be good, he's going to use it in one of the 601's but the other will get a 5 spd conversion.
