1966 Ford Forklift

Hello, I have a 1966 Ford forklift serial # 40506S... I have been able to get most mechanical parts for a 4000 tractor. Recently my power steering went out. can still turn, but dramatically worse. Problem started over nite. steering fluid comes from the gear pump that also runs the rest of the hydraulics which work fine. I have taken apart the rotary pump under the steering wheel. It was clean and in good shape. I checked the relief valve on the pump also free. I then pulled the steering cylinder and made no difference. I checked pressure at the gear pump and have 1100 psi. So far has me stumped. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

It's base off the 4040 industrial tractor, if so it would have a 4 cylinder 172 CI engine in it? The pump is a Eaton pump that was used on many ford products in the 1950s and 1960s (mustangs t-birds etc.).
Sometimes they become air bound and just by jacking up the wheels and working them back and forth it helps the air escape, and then you can add fluid if its low. Have you recently had a leak in the system, or
did some work to it? Any links in the hoses? There is a filter under the lid, is it clogged up? I'm just hoping it's something simply, this year has been to much!

Thanks for the reply.. It is the 4 cyl. 172 gasser. I did replace the filter. Have not had any leaks. I verified good flow to the rotary pump, and again at the cylinder. I appreciate the info on the pump. I had it apart when I bought the machine about 8 years ago to replace leaking seals, but never knew make. It also runs the forklift hydraulics which work as they should. At this point I have the steering cylinder off and apart waiting for seals. I coupled the 2 hoses so I could continue troubleshooting. Any ideas on what the pressure readings should be at different places? Thanks again

These forklifts are base off the ford tractor in the picture. Before I steer you wrong direction just want to be sure we are talking about the same thing. I trying to find a book that I had, it was about these forklifts but they were brand under Marshall forklifts.

Yes sir... From what I can see in the first and last pictures, they look identical down to the ROPS.

The steering changed on the tractors in about 1963 with the start of the 4140. I copy this from the manuals; earlier ones(1801/4040)had a PSI of 1500 where the later ones(4140) had a PSI of 1350. I don't know
if these was the same for the forklifts, as pump on the tractor only drove the steering where as the front pump drove the loader and if mounted the backhoe.

Ok here's that Marshall parts book I was thinking of it's from June 1964. I have one from ford that is a operating and assembly book for the 4000 and 718 series, I will include that in a separate reply.

My steering looks more like the marshal manual. The photo you sent of the forklift in your bone yard has the same pump set up as mine. shaft driven off the flywheel. Top line feeds the steering valve
(in my case a Charlynn orbitrol) the middle feeds the forklift hydraulics and the lower being suction. Is that how your white one is set up?

No it's has another pump for the steering, I have included a picture of it. I only have tractors(and the wife says too many at that) I went to purchase the white forklift but he had sold it already. The early
(1801,4040) industrial tractors had some trouble with their steering as well, it was a full power cable steering system that some been replaced by an aftermarket steering system(Jackson power steering sell one) or the later 4140 power
assisted signal pitman arm steering system that used the same pump as the one on the 1801 & 4040(pictured) just with the pressure reduced. The large pump you see in the picture on the remain of the
forklift(boneyard) is the same pump(I think would need to check the numbers to be sure) that the tractor using to drive the loader and backhoe. If you got an email I will try to get that part book(its only a few pages) scanned in and sent to you if you want.

Thanks for getting back, parts list would be great. My email:
[email protected]. I have a 580 case with similar steering pump, would be easier to figure out . The weather is supposed to get better in a couple days and I plan to check pressure at different points after the steering valve. I would expect close to the 1100 psi I have at the pump. Thanks again for the info... If I ever get this figured I'll let you know.
