Ford 1841 gaskets and seals

Hi all!

A month ago, I picked up a Ford 1841 Industrial Tractor through a barter. I am so STOKED, it's been the missing piece of my homestead - 4 years ago, I medically retired from the military, and bought 126 acres in Maine - I have built my own home and cleared 16 acres for farming.

I had to re-weld a hydraulic cylinder to the bucket mount. Someone put a quick attach and gnarly loader bucket (with teeth) on it. Reattach the throttle linkage (the guy literally told me these only go one speed, lol). Flush the fuel lines, which were plugged, and topped off the near empty hydraulic steering and main. Now I have a strong running (albeit leaky) beast!!!

There is diesel leaking around the fuel intake and oil from the back of the oil pan. I know those seals and gaskets need to be replaced and am sure there are more. I searched the Yesterdays tractors parts site but can't find a full Gasket kit for this model - I'd rather buy a whole set and take my time replacing things as I learn.

Does anyone know a reputable supplier that might? What are some good brands or even a OEM number to start?

Any advice for a newbie to check? Once I get a full gasket kit, I am planning on flushing everything and putting in new fluids: any preferences or suggestions?

I know you guys answer questions for the love of these tractors and helping others, and I TRULY appreciate it!!!

Also, I've searched through the forum's for 1841 and the posts associated and already learned a lot!! I couldn't find any information about gaskets and seals, that's why I'm posting this question.

I've rebuilt a few Jeep Cherokee's, so I'm familiar with gas engines but not diesels. Mine has also be retrofitted to 12v....but the glow plugs are still in the intake with an unconnected dangling wire - is that normal because of the upgrade?

I have a 971D which has the same fuel pump filter etc as your 841, but I am not familiar with the fuel "intake". I have never come across any full gasket set for any tractor or truck or car. The leak at the rear of the engine is probably just the valve cover gasket. the replacement gasket would be in the engine rebuild gasket set.

Gas was 6v positive ground, Diesel were 12v negative ground from the factory. It's common now to find them with the generator replaced by a alternator.

So there are 2 leaks? Rear oil pan leak (underneath tractor?) and Fuel intake - injectors?

You have a 1801 series and the model is a 1841. When looking for parts these are similar tractors 1801s, 4040's 4140's. They were made from 1958 to about 1965.
1801- 1958-60 red/grey 1 hyd filter for loader / full power cable steering
4040- 1960-1962 red/yellow 2 hyd filters for loader / full power cable steering
4140- 1963-1965 blue/yellow 2 hyd filters for loader / power assisted steering

That hoe you are looking at will fit. Sherman Black panther(12ft) and the 713/723(10-14ft) Ford hoes will work too. Fords are quicker and easier to mount and
unmount. Both the Sherman and the fords mount up in a similar way but you can not interchange the mounts between the two. They both are run off the front pump.

Showcrop,

Thanks for your response! I guess intake is probably the wrong term I'm talking about past the fuel pump filter it's where the fuel goes in, mixes with air, and is distributed into the engine. On a gas engine I would call it a carburetor but I didn't think Diesel engines have carburetors so I suppose it's a fuel pump? Have you rebuilt yours with new gaskets? If so, where did you purchase and would you recommend?

Yeah the leak is actually underneath the tractor at the rear of the oil pan and will be fixed with a new oil pan gasket.

I haven't found a "full gasket set" for any vehicle either, but I was hoping with older tractors having simple engines they might be available. The only thing I've found is a "Complete Engine gasket" set by All State Tractor parts - but not having worked with tractors before, I am unsure if this is a quality brand?

There are "full gasket kits" for doing engine rebuilds, and full seal/gasket kits for other individual components, like the hydraulic top cover and power steering pump, but I've never heard of a "full gasket kit" for the entire tractor. Even the fuel injection system (injection pump, lines, fittings, filter, etc.) doesn't have a "full gasket kit" or "full seal kit" available for everything in one kit, although the injection pump itself might.

IndFord,

Thanks for the reply, and thank you SO much for the photos!!! It's great to see my same type of tractor with a backhoe on it. I didn't realize that a Sherman or Ford 723 will fit as well - that's great to have more options to search.

You are johnny on the spot, about the electric - mine now has an alternator.

Yes the first leak is the oil pan gasket, the second doesn't seem to be the individual injectors leaking but somewhere on the carb looking guy beneath it - I'm sure it's just old gaskets that need to be replaced. Is a kit for that something that is common to buy? If so, do you know where I could get one?

Just to make sure I'm tracking do the 1801 series, 4040, and 4140 have the same engine?

Mine has a hydraulic steering ram and separate power steering reservoir - is that an after market modification?

Sorry for the million questions!!!

Sean,

Thanks for your response! Specifically the injection pump - do you know where I could find a gasket kit for that? I've checked the parts store here and didn't find anything for the 1841 (but I haven't checked the referenced models IndFord stated yet).

Yes engine is a 172 cubic inch ohv 4 cylinder that came in both gas and diesel. Parts are in good supply and these engines where used in the 801,901,1801 and 4000(early 4 cylinders) series tractors. The 800 series also carry the 172 cubic inch ohv 4 cylinder but there are some very minor differences like head bolts size, carburetor and no diesels (they came out in 1958 with the start of the 801s). In the picture the Red and grey tractor with the Sherman backhoe is a 1958 1801 1821, the yellow tractor is a 1963 HD4000 4140 and the blue and white is a 1965 HD4000 4140 (April 1965), however when getting parts I consider it a 1964. Sounds like a rear main seal leak, common foe. The arrow is pointing to the steering arm on a 1963 HD4000 41400s. The 1801 and 4040 had full power cable steering where the 4140 had a power assisted single steering arm. I like the cable steering but parts for that system are no longer available.
