860/960 transmission/pto seals

There's been some discussion and seemingly some disagreement on the specific seals used in the X60/X61 transmission and PTO input shafts. I have a split coming up and bit the bullet and went to CHN and bought the seals from their parts desk.

Transmission input shaft seal =
CHN part # D6NN7A283A =
common seal ID = SKF 10515

PTO input shaft seal =
CHN part # 8N4233A =
common seal ID = CR-19831

Total cost from CHN for these two seals = $36.65

Searching the internet finds the same seals available for half price or less. Any industrial supplier and many auto parts stores could get these at CHN price or less and may save two long road trips which is often the most expensive and time consuming part. I've got over 100 miles wrapped up in acquiring these two seals from CHN. Fortunately I had other business which took me to the area for the first trip, but they did not have either of these seals in stock so a special trip was necessary to pick them up.

Hope this helps someone.

David

Just did these on my '58 841 gasser a week ago. There are two PTO shaft seals. One at the end in the cap, and one in the rear end assembly, both p/n D9NN703BB. These are wide double-lipped seals like the factory installed. No idea on the industry number (may not exist); they were not marked.

The one in the rear casting is challenging to get out and back in, but I've had worse.

The seal for the PTO "extension/support" (PTO shift mechanism which bolts to the trans) AND the seal for the mainshaft which connects to the splined sleeve to the rear pinion are both 233274 (also NAA77086A and D6NN7R240A). These were particularly expensive. I ordered from Messicks and got SKF 17443's which fit fine. These are narrow single-lipped seals, similar to what came out.

I have a Sherman, but the input seal is the same, p/n 8N7052A2 which is SKF 13568

If you're splitting, don't forget the hydraulic tube o-rings, #14457281 and #134372

I see your numbers are not the same. I don't see the wide seal for the PTO shaft itself. Maybe they gave you the thin ones? I got the part numbers from the exploded diagrams. Some were superseded to the numbers I listed above. All ordered from Messicks and they fit properly.

Pics show the thin SKF 17443 and the wide D9NN703BB. Yeah, I boogered the thin seal and had to order another :(

Hi Graham - the seals referenced in my post are the input shaft(s) seals near the clutch. The two stage clutch of the X60/X61 series has a seal on the transmission input shaft and a seal (larger one) on the PTO input shaft. Your 841 with a single stage clutch would have one seal which I believe, but am not sure, is the same as the smaller seal referenced above.

FYI, I just bought the NAPA equivalent of the 19831 at my local NAPA two days ago, and it cost about $12 and worked perfectly for the same application in my 860.

The original seal also keeps dirt out if I were to use your re-placement seal I would put two in, I would put the outer in backwards as a dust seal.
