ford 801 smoking by hydraulic pump

My 801 Ford usually runs great but after letting it set for over a month or so without using it, It smoked terribly on start up and cleared up after a minute or so. I could not see where the smoke came from because it was so great but it appeared to come from the area around the hydraulic pump manifold where it connects to the engine. It sat for another month or so and did the same thing.
Any ideas as to the source and cause of the smoking?

Also my gas tank shut off valve is leaking and it takes me a whole day of more to replace it. I don't think there is any connection to the smoking problem. That gas tank valve is a terrible design!

I would say that the smoke is likely coming from the exhaust manifold a few inches ahead and higher than the hydraulic manifold. The gas shut-off should take just a few minutes. Perhaps you are not removing the valve cover?

Check the oil line coming from your oil pressure gauge. It connects to the engine just above the pump. I have
seen the line break and the oil will puddle down, get hot and smoke. The exhaust is on the other side on the 801.

I suspect that gas got into the cylinders and crankcase and smoke is
coming out from the timing inspection hole near the flywheel. Can't
believe I cannot find source of smoke when there is so much. I just
cannot figure any escape route.
Maybe the leaking gas tank shutoff valve is involved. I will move
the tractor to a barn near the house and continue watching it.
I have replaced the valve on several of these type and always
removed the tank and hood taking lots of my time! Sounds like you have
done it with the hood and tank on by removing the valve cover. Is it
really that easy, including tightening the fuel line to the valve? I am
83 years old and not too steady with my hands anymore! Wish you were
here!

(quoted from post at 11:53:12 12/23/20) I suspect that gas got into the cylinders and crankcase and smoke is coming out from the timing inspection hole near the flywheel. Can't believe I cannot find source of smoke when there is so much. I just cannot figure any escape route.

Timing inspection hole gives access to the flywheel, which is in the bell housing and that should be dry and sealed from the internals of the engine itself. If the bell housing is filling with smoke, then you need to split the tractor to see where it is coming from.

If you suspect that gasoline got into the crankcase do not run it until you have drained the contaminated oil and replaced it with new clean oil. Gasoline mixed with the crankcase oil will wash the lubrication off of the bearings and will cause damage in short order.

There are very few things I can think of that cause smoke on a cold start up. The most common is coolant leaking into a cylinder and that smoke would come out the exhaust which is on the other side of the tractor. What color is the smoke and does it have any odor to it?

I replace the shut off valves by removing the muffler and not the valve cover. It is close working quarters though and some times the mufflers are difficult to get off without destroying them.

In addition to removing the valve cover which is quick and easy, I also lift the tank a little by backing the the single front mounting bolt nut off and loosening the two rear a little. you can gain 3/4 of an inch at the front.

Thanks for the ideas to help replace the valve. Lots of folks here can
make use of that info I bet.
I suspects now that the smoke is coming from the exhaust manifold and
blowing around a heat shield leading to the other side. I think gas is
getting into the manifold and is burning off at start up.
