Ford 4000 PTO disengage problem

Looking at a Ford 4000 diesel tractor, was told it is a 1974 model row crop 36" back tires square finder . The tractor starts in the cold good, the lift works good and the transmission clutch works good. 8 speed transmission. No problem engaging the PTO but when you move the leaver to disengage the PTO it keeps running. If you turn the tractor off the PTO stays off until you engage the PTO lever again. Then to get the PTO to stop you have to disengage the PTO leaver and turn off the tractor to get the PTO again to stop turning. Anyone had this problem with their Ford 4000 tractor. Other than that the tractor runs good with just a little diesel leak around the throttle linkage. Thanks TC

There is a pto brake on those which should stop the pto when it is not engaged.
It is just a cheesy little thing and often is worn out.
You can check it with an 8' 2x4 and pry against the pto shaft. That should stop it easily. If that is the case you can do what most guys do which is live with it that way.
It requires a rear split to fix the pto brake and the part is a couple Hundred $.
If you can not stop it with a 2x4 then your pto valve may be sticking or your pto clutch plates could be warped though that is not as likely..
None of it is too complicated and the I&T FO-31 manual has a good write-up on that clutch.

Thanks, Ultradog MN, I will be going to get the tractor today. It may be 4 months before I get to go into it because I have back surgery the Tuesday after Christmas, so no lifting or working on heavy things for a while. I will spend that time getting manuals on it and researching the tear down of it. Just knowing that there is a break on the PTO when disengaged is a good start. Thanks TC , When I get over the operation and if I decide to go into the tractor I will let everyone know what I found or if I decide to just live with it I will also let everyone know. Sad to say so many people post here for help and then never let us know what fixed their problem on their tractor. Even if you had to take it to a dealer in the end, we would like to know what they had to do.
