2000 4 cyl Question

Bought a ‘62 model 2000 4 cyl a while back. Tractor had a little smoke and blow-by. The man I bought it from said his grandfather bought it new and he did not think the
head has ever been off of it. I decided to remove the head and take a look about a rebuild. This engine does not appear to have sleeves. I thought all of the 134 and
172 engines where sleeved engines? Have not done much checking yet but do have a little ring groove. Tractor will never see hard use and was hoping to just rebuild
the head and rings but now I don’t know.
 
I'm not sure exactly when they went to parent bore. Pretty sure it was the late 01 Series.
For sure a 000 Series had no sleeves.
I think the change occured at the same time they did changed the block casting and did away with the canister type oil filter.
Late 01s and your 000 should have a spin on oil filter.
 
Thanks, from looking online at rebuild kits it must have been about that time. Mine does have the spin on filter. Was trying not to spend too much on it, but to fix it right that won’t happen. Now to decide how I proceed with it. Don’t really need the tractor but a family member had it and was fairly cheap.
 
Do you have the means to measure your bores?
Or get a notion of how much ring ridge you have?
What would decide it for me is the ridge.
If not too bad you can rent a ridge reamer at most auto parts stores, return it and get your $ back.
Then have the valves done, install new rings and I would do rod bearings.
That would get you 1K or 1.5K more good hours out of it which for many of us here is 6 or 8+ years.
 
That is what I’m thinking. Going to try to measure the bore to get some idea how bad it is. Ring groove will catch your finger nail and always heard that was bad. Might have access to a ridge reamer as I borrowed one years ago from a friend. It had good oil pressure before I tore it down so I was hoping for just the head redone and new rod bearing and rings. We shall see.
 


If all it does is catch your fingernail a little and it has good oil pressure and a little blow by I would just get a new head gasket and put the head back on. Then I would check compression. A little blow by is normal.
 
I bought one about 25 years ago, '63 diesel and it jumped out of 4th on the road and smoked, blue smoke with around 3000 hrs. Even on cold days here in N. Tx. I could always start it easily telling me that I had good compression. After 25 years of running fresh diesel with PS snake oil, I decided to dump a can of Sea Foam in the crankcase and running at fast idle for half an hour before draining. Hah. The smoke is all but gone and only occurs at start up. I had thought I had worn valve guides but I guess not. Mine hasn't had a wrench on he engine block proper either. Couple of water pumps, starter, gen, proofmeter and cable, lift cylinder piston seal. It has the 4 sp tranny PTO both would be nicer if Live and 6 sp. but not all that big of a deal.

The slipping out on 4th quit after I had it awhile and put some hours on it, forcing it to stay in gear with my hand till it quit. I have a few pinholes in the hydraulic line going through the tranny crank case. Just pulled the full screw on the side of the housing and let it out every once in awhile when I think about it. Several years ago I just quit using gear oil in the tranny....just filled it with the trans-hyd fluid I use in the hydraulics. Starts and shifts easier in the winter but gears are slightly noisier....not a problem but noticeable when you are paying attention.
 
If it has set a while, I would put some SeaFoam or ATF in it and
work the snot out of it to see what clears up before I tore it down.
You could still do that with a new head gasket. Your choice.
