Ford 651 Carb Problem

Hello,

I have a Ford 651 with a Marvel Schebler TSX765 carb on it. The tractor keeps running out of gas. The float seems to be dropping ok when it needs to, but the needle valve sticks all the time. I've been told to try to find an all steel needle valve, but all I can find are the rubber tipped ones. I put a simple rebuild kit in the carb already, but it didn't make any difference. Any ideas on how ti fix this?

Thanks,
Dan

hose plastic/viton/rubber tipped needles do not typically stick while running....mostly after sitting for a time. Look for slow gas flow, filters, strainers, clogged fuel valve, dirty tank, cap without a vent. It will start & run for about one to two minutes on amount of fuel in carb bowl & if the flow into bowl problem exist, then it dies, but after long sit, will repeat.

I've never had one do this before. The tractor will start, and run for several minutes before running out of gas. When it dies, I get off and tap the side of the carb to get the gas flowing again. When I had the carb off the tractor, I took the bowl off. Then I turned the carb over as if it was on the tractor. I then pushed the float up like it was full of gas, then released it. Most of the time the needle valve would not drop with the float. I was careful not to press too hard, thinking I was pushing the needle valve into the seat to much. But that didn't seem to make a difference. The fuel shutoff on the tank is new, and I've replaced the screen at the sediment bowl. And the tank looks clean inside. Not sure what else it could be.

What makes you so sure that it is that float valve? How do you know that the gas is even getting to the carb fast enough to keep it running? Read JMOR's answer.

Because I've removed the drain plug on the bottom of the fuel bowl when the tractor has died. No gas comes out. But when I tap the carb, gas starts flowing out the drain. So either that float was stuck or the valve. And I have seen the valve sticking when I had the carb off.

What did you do to correct the stuck valve when you saw it? Did the kit you installed have the small spring "clip" that goes from the needle to the float to ensure positive movement of the needle? Not all kits do, but if the kit did have one, is it properly in place? When you had the carb off and assembled, if you tip it from right side up to upside down do you hear the float move freely?

It only takes a few minutes to unhook the fuel line from the carb and confirm the amount that flows into a jar in a minute or two.
Posting that info ends the need to ask the question, as people have seen a problem that area in the past and just want to eliminate it for certain.

Just some thoughts.

Sorry if I seem a little short with people. I'm still tired from digging out of the record 40" of snow we got mid last week. Finally got the 2n out of the barn to plow some of the banks back today, and clean up around the driveway. But still much shoveling to do. The barn roof collapsed under the snow load, so we couldn't get the door open to get the tractor out.
The kit I ordered didn't have the spring clip for the needle valve. I ordered a kit that had the same needle valve that was already in the carb, and that one doesn't have the attachment on it for the clip. Maybe that's the answer I need. Get a different kit that does use a clip. Then the float would pull the valve open when needed. Thanks for the replies.
