Bern 3000 ford brakes again

Bern can you tell me the purpose of the large nut and the torque value. I loosened this by my hand.

The large nut holds the wheel bearing tight up against the axle. The torque spec is 230-250 ft/lbs, which will be difficult for you to achieve without either the special tool, or else a home-made tool you might build. If I was in a hurry and didn't want to make a tool, I'd likely put some loctite on the nut, snug it down with a big channel locks and then final tighten it with a BFH and a big chisel.
