The thermostart fits in the intake manifold, it is connected to the fuel return line and power. when you apply power an element heats up, allows diesel to drip in, ignites and makes a flame. It is actuated from the ignition switch, there are different ways that is done, some you turn left like an accessory, mine is halfway from on to start.

Yep, you know you have a good one when flames shoot out. That said, it was not as effective a starting aid with the hose off,
since the objective of the thermostart is to heat the air in the intake pipe, not heat the air as it's rushing past.

Interesting. I thought the intake stroke suction pulled these "Great Balls of Fire" (Jerry Lee Lewis, singer) into the combustion chamber and lit the diesel mist that way......... No doubt they could make a firy puddle under the device, but smoky seemingly. Butttttt I'm not the expert. I just recall reading it in a service manual....I &T must have been.
