7610 loader tractor

I have a semi-local 7610 4wd, FEL with the older style cab which would mean maybe early to mid 80's model. It isn't a II. Tractor is clean. Price is way too high. Before I waste any effort I had a question about the shifter. It appears to be up on the column by the steering wheel. This would be a loader tractor and I can't find much info on that column shift setup. There are some posts from overseas that say that shifter is junk and I have read at least one other place that there were different units and one was fine while the other.... stay away from it.

Anyone have any insight and if so does that shifter work ok for loader work.? I know it might not be the best overall because it is syncro but my other Fords are bullet proof and before I change colors I thought I might ask. It's a clean tractor if they will get reasonable about the price I might pay a little more for it.

I can't tell you anything about long term
durability or repairs, but I did spend a
couple days on a 6610II with that style
shifter when it was pretty new. It took
some getting used to, but shifted very
nice. If it's working ok, should be a
hood loader tractor.

That's the standard shifting arrangement for the early syncro tractors with straddle mount cabs. Not ideal, especially the
pre-H pattern models, but they work.

That's the later H pattern shift so it should be ok. The earlier style 'rubics cube' shift was a little more complex.
It does look clean. You really need to drive it to see if you get on with the column shift.

I have the h style shifter in our 1982 Ford 6610 without cab. The only thing I don't like is the snap ring that holds the upper shifter keeps dropping (can't engage into gears 1 & 2). I just have to push the snap ring up once and a while. If the upper shifter isn't at the right height, its a pain to shift into gear (just annoying, not really a pain).

No experience with the column shifters but the earlier models had integral power steering in the column, I have heard of issues with the columns on models with 4wd and loaders
I'd much rather have a series II with side shift and hydrostatic steering.
