Finally got that 860 ring gear on!

It's been quite a while since I posted my question about how hot a ring gear needs to be. Since then I twice tried heating it w/my BBQ grill & it didn't work. I let it all set for a while as I needed to replace the trans input shaft seals & could not find the correct part #s. Finally got that done, so tried again w/the BBQ grill w/the same result. Yesterday I put the flywheel in the freezer, then today took the grill & grease catcher pan out of the BBQ & set the ring directly above the flame on the metal "flame spreader" for an hour. Got the flywheel out & the ring dropped on w/no need of force. Sure was easy once I got it right!

I set the flywheel on a couple of wood blocks, set the ring gear on a concrete block next to it, heat the ring gear for maybe two minutes with my torch, then pick it up and drop it on the flywheel.

I would speculate that your grille done you a whole lot more good then did the freezer. Yep, a rose bud works for me also!

I recently did a ring gear while checking with my laser thermometer. Had to get it to about 450 degrees. I used a rosebud with Propane and Oxygen.

LOL UD!! I have to say I always wish I could afford a few more "fancy tools". My torch (a small propane one) doesn't have the needed horsepower!

I don't have one either, UD, or even a torch, which is one of the reasons why I farmed out my 8N ring gear project.

It is going to cost me a bunch of money but I know and trust the guy who is doing the work and expect that everything will be done much as I would have done in times past.

I have a oxy-acetylene torch. What actually is a rosebud? Is that a special tip for the torch? I have a couple of welding tips and the cutting tip.

It's a big honkin tip for heating stuff.
Fast!
You can get them bigger than this one.
