Ford 5000 simms injection low return flow

Bought a 5000 project tractor, running rough with white smoke at low and high rpms. Due to the hours and
age, I replaced injectors as a first step, which helped a bit. Checked timing, advanced up to 23 then
backed to 19. No real change. Now it runs ok after it warms up, but still smokes white at low and wide
open throttle, decreasing as it warms up. The thing that has me puzzled is the normal return bleed off
flow to the tank is essentially zero. The line was actually broken when I got it and only a slight trickle
of fuel was leaking onto the block. This is why I thought the injectors might be leaky. Replaced the lines,
and they are all a clear all the way to the tank. My question is whether this means the pump is worn and
just not pumping the high pressure fuel volume that it should. I've never seen a Ford not return fuel to
the tank. On the good side, once it warms up a bit, it doesn't roll coal under load and seldom misses
while loaded. I just like them to work right!

The early Ford/Simms pumps had no return line, only the injectors did. Correctly working injectors have VERY LITTLE return fuel back to tank. Early Simms pumps had two bleed screws, later only the front one as the rear one is not needed. The late Simms pumps have a constant bleed orifice in the front bleed port instead of the screw. White smoke that clears as engine warms up is usually low cylinder compression, has that been tested?

Thanks for that info on the early return lines. This is an early 5000, and my previous experience with the fords were later models that did have a good return. Now I can forget about the low leak off return being a problem. I think the other posts are probably correct - low compression. Thanks all!

I have an early 5000. Return line from injectors only. Had pretty sporty return flow until I replaced the tank (full of gel and debris, pin holes) injectors, and lines, now very little flow.
Just as Dieseltech said. Glad I read this. I had been worried about the change in flow with the new injectors, now I know it is a good thing.

thanks for the post and the replies.
