Bought a 5000 project tractor, running rough with white smoke at low and high rpms. Due to the hours and
age, I replaced injectors as a first step, which helped a bit. Checked timing, advanced up to 23 then
backed to 19. No real change. Now it runs ok after it warms up, but still smokes white at low and wide
open throttle, decreasing as it warms up. The thing that has me puzzled is the normal return bleed off
flow to the tank is essentially zero. The line was actually broken when I got it and only a slight trickle
of fuel was leaking onto the block. This is why I thought the injectors might be leaky. Replaced the lines,
and they are all a clear all the way to the tank. My question is whether this means the pump is worn and
just not pumping the high pressure fuel volume that it should. I've never seen a Ford not return fuel to
the tank. On the good side, once it warms up a bit, it doesn't roll coal under load and seldom misses
while loaded. I just like them to work right!
