WHILE DISASSEMBLING THE CONTROL VALVE THE CONTROL VALVES FELL OUT. 3 OF THE HOLES HAVE SPRINGS IN THEM, AND ONE OF THEM HAS 2 BALL BEARINGS IN IT. QUESTION #1 DOES THE ONES THAT HAVE BALL BEARINGS NEED A SPRING LIKE THE OTHER ONES AND WHICH HOLE DOES THIS ONE GO IN? THANKS

+1 on Ultradog’s post. He’s the man on these. That wasn’t his only post about this, search the archives for others.

There are 8 plungers, 3 springs and 2 balls
in the control valve.
2 are special plungers with horns on the
end.
Clean the parts thoroughly and lube with a
light grease.

Set the valve on the column and load it
from the top.
Note the extra fitting the yellow pencil
points to. That goes toward the right side
at the top.
Note the green pencil. In that hole install
one special plunger horns up. Then 2 balls.
Then the other special plunger horns down.
The other holes get an ordinary plunger,
then a spring, then another ordinary
plunger.
Welcome to the Ford Board.
I think deer hunting and Ford Tractors are
interrelated.
I didnt get a big buck. Only saw 2 deer all
season. Took a doe.
A blind man could have tracked her.

Thanks for this very timely pic of the control valve, Ultradog! My '65 3400 starting puking fluid out the steering column over the weekend, and I have it mostly torn down but I haven't unstaked the nut or pulled the control valve out yet. When I did this work on my 4000su I only replaced the upper seal, but I figure I'll do both on this one.

Ordered parts based on your previous posts, but I was struggling to know for sure exactly which way things should go back in. Your pic matches the manual that I have, which I believe puts the check valve in the hole closest to the driver's seat.

One other thing I saw in my manual was a picture showing an identification groove on the inside of the valve spool, with a comment that the groove should be installed "towards the bottom of the steering shaft".

I'm still planning to pay careful attention when I take it apart. Thinking I should use a magnet to carefully remove the plungers, springs, and balls before lifting the valve housing off the shaft.

Thanks again!
Greg

Can't complain, Ultradog. This seal is the first real issue in a long time. Most of my wrenching time has been spent lately bringing some older motorcycles back to a healthy life. Good to be back though!

And doing even better now that the 3400 is running again! The magnet worked well for extracting the check valve and plungers before removing the control valve. My shop manual says to remove the steering gear and everything above it, and have it on the bench with the steering shaft horizontal when the control valve is removed (presumably to those parts don't go everywhere ;^)

Glad I replaced the lower seal on the adaptor too.. there was a lot of gunk and goo in the control valve!

I hear that you are the person to talk to about the power steering control valve. I have my control valve removed want to make sure that I am reinstalling it correctly. and not putting it in upside down. does the printing on the valve pr go to the left side face up or right side face down? Also I only have 1 ball bearing that go between the horns. Do I need 2? I am having a lot of trouble figuring out how to use this forum in the archives. When I search and put in key words, it doesn't bring up the answers to the question that I need. I just get random things that don't apply to my question. Could you help my figure this out? Is there an easy way to search the archives and get key word answers to this power steering issue. I know that there are answers there, I just can't find them.

Ultradog's tutorial on the valve body is about the best thing ever posted on this site. I was completely intimidated by that part but he made it easy as pie. I even made myself a cheat sheet that I could print out for when I have to assemble one.
