More 4400 Flywheel Questions....

Okay so I got the tractor split, took the flywheel apart and it had oil inside it and around the clutch? Is this supposed to be some kind of a wet clutch for the SOS transmission? I've never seen anything like it. We believe it was hydraulic or rear end oil, rather than motor oil.

Also, are gas and diesel flywheels the same dimensions, with the exception of the ring gear? Can I simply order a gas ring gear and swap them onto my diesel flywheel?

Or.... Are the bendix the same inside the starts, and could I put a diesel bendix in a gas starter?

Does anyone have a part number for the thick rubber seal that goes between the engine backing plate and the back side of the motor?

Thanks

The clutch disc in the flywheel of an SOS transmission is supposed to be very much dry. You'd better figure out where the oil is coming from and fix it before you put it back together. Also, make sure the cotter pin hole on the bottom of the bellhousing is clean - make sure there is a cotter pin in there.

I believe the only difference between the gas and diesel flywheels is only the ring gear, but don't quote me on that. In the old days I'd go onto the NH parts website to confirm, but I'm really not interested in trying to make up new curse words.

My 69 4000 was a gas SOS when we drug it in, first thing I did was swap it over to diesel, I used the gas flywheel and added a diesel starter ring, it's a simple swap, same can be done swapping from diesel to gas.
Diesel starter bendix will not work on a gas starter, nor will a diesel starter work on a gas engine, starter is to long and will hit the carburetor, solenoid on the diesel starter interferes with in intake air hose.

One way to say it is the flywheel always stays with the transmission.
Doesn't matter if the engine is gas or diesel - change the ring gear if need be - they are a direct swap - but keep the flywheel with the transmission.

Okay. Sounds good guys, thank you! I ordered a ring and starter.

Can anyone point me in the direction of where oil might be coming from? The shaft sticking out of transmission that the clutch slides onto has a small ball on the inside of it? Could I be loosing fluid there? Thanks!

It could be leaking there, but I really doubt it. The only time I ever saw a shaft leak there was after I had the splines repaired. Evidently the heating of the shaft during the repair caused the sealing material on the ball to go away. I put some weld over the top of it and all was well after that.

Interesting, good to know thank you.

This tractor was on fire, I dont think it would have gotten that hot in there but never know.

It wont hurt to weld it up? Thanks
