801 stutters, stalls going uphill

1958 Ford 801...usually works great, but occasionally stutters and stalls going uphill.

It starts gasping, as if it was going to run out of gas. Can often keep it going by taking all load off motor and reducing idle speed, letting it come back to power.

Other times it kills immediately, and it won't keep restart fully until I let it set maybe 15-30 seconds. It's as if fuel is running slowly into the carb bowl, needs to fill the bowl before it'll run normally.

This may be the state for a while...but eventually it will start working normally, up hill or down, until the next time it chokes and dies going uphill.

Any ideas?

When any tractor is climbing a hill the governor is opening the throttle so it needs a stronger flow of gas. You need to check the flow. Get a quart or similar container, remove the drain plug from the float bowl on the bottom of the carb, and see how much you catch in two minutes. You need to get a pint or you have a restriction. It is most likely the screen inside the tank or the one in the fuel bowl.

Thanking you for the response and good advice. I'm away from the tractor for the holidays but I'll give your thorough suggestion a try ASAP and will report back.
