Ford 740 loader bucket dump cylinder seal

Could I get away with just putting the seal in the cap that screws into the cylinder and not the cone (I don't know what the name of it is)? There should be one on the other cylinder. I tried a different seal (the same size, not hard plastic) and I couldn't get it into the cone (they seem to be the same size). I don't see a part number for the come on NH website.

That is often called the gland and that "seal" in the gland is normally a wiper installed with the lips facing out, opposite what is in your picture, to clean the rod as it retracts.

Thank you. I ended up getting the cylinders done tonight. I have some new lines to replace.
