Green vs pink antifreeze

Anyone run pink antifreeze in there tractor? We have a 3 cylinder diesel 4000 motor that had green in it for most of its life and we had distilled water for 12 months and for a year pink antifreeze. I ended up putting a block heater in and I was wondering what was better, pink or green antifreeze. I dont want the block to go porous. The inside of the block was cleaner than the 6610 block. The 6610 has mud in it while the 4000 motor feels clean. This freeze plug is from the 4000 motor. The pink antifreeze is from the 4000 motor which is clean.

I would not hesitate to use either type of antifreeze along with distilled water.

I woulkd also add anti-cavitation protection.

The newer antifreeze is.....

safer for the enviroment,
lasts twice longer,
compatible with more types of metals.alloys. and plastics,
fights acid build up for a longer period of time.

Either one will prevent freezing.

You can run 2 year antifreeze or 10 year antifreeze.

If you are using pink,
stay with it. If you go
back to green a thourogh
flushing will be needed,
they don't mix and will
create a jelly like goo

Always use a thermostat --- old wives do not make good techs or mechanics. Resident N guru Bruce(VA) wrote a good article on the N Series cooling system in The N-News. Read all about OAT and IAT. Save the pix to your PC and print them out from there if 'N ya don't subscribe...

Ended up getting back to the tractor today, I ended up selling a different tractor yesterday. The block heater didn't want to seat right and kept leaking (I think I got it now). But the radiator needs to be flushed. Would vinegar work for flushing out the block with the block heater? The antifreeze (pink) that I had in it before is starting to clog up the radiator and there is pink slim at the top.

I ended up putting 1 1/2 gallons of vinegar with a gallon of water in to clean out the insides. Gonna let the tractor run for the next hour or so. The vinegar has been fermenting in the basket for almost 3 years.

(quoted from post at 21:28:17 11/14/20) wondering what was better, pink or green antifreeze.

"better" at what exactly?

The color, by itself, of antifreeze means effectively nothing about the antifreeze. It's a dye. There are some quasi-standards that some manufacturers follow but it isn't too much of a strict rule.

refer to https://www.valvoline.com/our-products/antifreeze-products/antifreeze-education/engine-coolant for one manufacturer's perspective.

Based on this, a "traditional" IAT (Inorganic Additive Technology) mix is probably the best best all around for your machine.

More sophisticated mixes (e.g. OAT or HOAT) likely fall in the "won't help, likely won't hurt" category based on the ancient age and design an materials.

I just noticed that the pink is like bubble gum in the radiator. I shouldn't have used the pink. The radiator was clean before I put that stuff in.

if you run a OAT or dexcool antifreeze, its important that you have a recovery tank so that no air is in the system. Other wise you will get the sludge problem from oxidation. GM introduced it in 1996 to all of their cars but by then they all had recovery tanks due to epa requirements.

I think everyone overthinks a lot of this and forgets the KISS rule of keepin it simple. Green works as it always has. On my 3 cyl diesel I use green and add WIX additive for cavitation. I have a block heater and the only problem I've ever had with it was when the nut behind the wheel forgot to unplug it before starting and running the tractor, they don't like that.
