Ford 4400, Perkins Swap??

Hi all, I've got a 4400, that originally was a backhoe/loader tractor. It caught on fire, and long story short sat with water in the motor and the engine is junk.

The tractor has 3 point rock shaft and pto, and I've been looking for an engine to replace it, and have a good farm tractor, as I already happen to have another 4400 with the same front loader and backhoe, so now I've got a spare backhoe for it! And loader if need be.

A friend of ours has a Perkins 142 3 cylinder diesel, and he seems to think it will swap in? Is that the case? I've heard rumor before that Ford and Perkins are similar motors, or Ford used to use Perkins motors, or something of that nature. But all in all I am not very familiar with them? Anyone have some insight?

Thanks! Bryce

Some of the earlier Fordson tractors used engines made by Perkins, but I don't think any Perkins engine is a direct swap for a 1965+ 3 cylinder Ford engine.

Not gonna happen. Assuming you got it to fit after adapting it, you'd soon break it in half trying to use it. The Ford block is massive compared to the Perkins.

As Bern said.
The cast iron pan used on the 4400 and others added a lot of strength too.
The myth that these engines were somehow related to Perkins is an old one.

As said the Perkins engine will not fit, the fact of dropping down from a 52 hp 201 ci engine to a 32 hp 144 ci engine would stop me right there.
You should be able to find another 201 engine fairly easy as it was used in the 4000 and later series tractors from 1965 till it was replaced in the 4630 series with the 192 turbo engine.
For a rebuilder the older 192 gas blocks are the same bore and can be used as the base for a 201 diesel build
I'd tear down the present engine to see if it's salvageable, after a good soaking we beat the pistons out of a block with a 8 lb sledge hammer and 2x4, had sleeves installed and that engine is still in use today.

I've posted this picture before.
Was a 192 gasser and is now a 201 diesel.
I was lucky it had been sleeved before so
the sleeves came out with the pistons
pretty easy.
I pressed in new sleeves and was good to
go.

What he said!!!

the [b:e8a2577262]FORDSON[/b:e8a2577262] line made in England... before the "world" tractor line that started in 1965.... either used a perkins or made the their engines under a perkins license. These were from 195x to 1964 tractors.... when the english factories converted over to the "world" tractor line that matched the antwerp and US factories using the new ford designed engine.
