801 engine refresh

Hello everyone,
Looking for some advice on my 801 gas. I
had to pull the head, blew the gasket,
and decided since I'm in it, I'm gonna
freshen it up. My hangup is the sleeves.
I'll be honest, I'm a little scared to
mess with them. Afraid of running into
problems with the pulling/installing.
Would I be just as well to hone the
existing sleeves and go back with new
pistons and rings?

Thanks!

Your question to answer is how much are the old sleeves worn? I have taken short cuts in engine assembly and each time I regretted it. How many hours are on the engine, and how are the bearings? If you hone you will end up with grit in the oil. Pull the engine and have the block cleaned and new sleeves installed. Rebuild the rods and have bearings fitted to the crank.

If you are unwilling or unable to do that, then clean up the valves and put the head back on.

Go out of tolerance on worn sleeves or bad bearings and you will be back in there to do it right.

With a little care a gas 172 will go 9000+ hours before a major overhaul.

I have no idea of the hours on this old gal. I've had it 4 years and it hasn't had an hour meter on it since before I got it.

Depends on how much wear is in the cylinders. Is there a considerable ring ridge on the top? Is there any scoring? If "no" to both questions, I'd glaze bust the cylinders and install new rings and bearings. Even pistons can be re-used if there is no scoring or other obvious damage like broken ring lands.

I will pull pistons tomorrow and see for sure the answer to both of those. I should have said in original post, this is not a restore, or a parade queen tractor. It gets used on the farm, I'm not looking for perfection.

Update. Pulled pistons today, cylinders look good, no scoring on walls or pistons. Some wear on the rod bearings. Went to measure journals but my digital caliper battery is dead. Womp whomp. Gotta find a battery so I can ensure I order the correct size bearings, and double check for overbore/ring size.
