Ford 861 Idles Good, quits on throttle up.

I recently purchased a Ford 861 with a loader. It ran fairly well. However, when I shut if off, gas would leak out of the intake hose. I suspected a bad float so ordered a rebuild kit and installed. Now it starts right up when throttle at idle. When I try to increase rpm's the engine dies. I tried adjusting the float. I tried the main adjust at 1-1/8 turns, 1-1/2, and 2. Nothing seems to help.
Any suggestions are appreciated. Carb is TSX-813

Miss/stall upon throttle up can be caused by lean mixture but is usually due to weak ignition.

Never address carburetion until ignition is spot on.

Just got done lowering the float an additional 1/16" to combat flooding.

Did your rebuild kit include a new main jet turbulator? My word, unscrewed the main jet and removed
the brass tube that extends into the venturi. Many holes small and I am convinced not all were clear.

Purchased a quartz window spark plug, set carb mixture in 2 minutes. Life is good.

I have not looked at the plugs or points yet. It did throttle up before I did the rebuild so I suspect the carb is the issue.

Ernie, I had soaked the carb in solvent and sprayed passages with WD40. The kit had the tube, float, needle etc. I will try to find some small wire to run down the passages today. My eyes aren't as good as they used to be so I might have missed something. I might have to go pick up my Grandson and have him look for a secret passage that is plugged.

(quoted from post at 11:28:47 09/27/20) WD40 is NOT a carburetor cleaner.

NO its not.. buts its usually around the bench,, and it has a straw and it will blow liquid through the ports showing they are good or they are blocked.... so its probably responsible for more successful carb repairs on the bubble gum crud from the external_link- gas.... than carb cleaner is. When the fluid doesnt come out, then sometimes only a wire will unclog this new pariah on man kind.

AND some ports run in multiple directions so you need to look for the fluid coming out of both directions from the starting point.

wd40 is great for verifing the passages are open as it has a straw and sits on almost all benches...

main jet is blocked...

I changed the points, cap, condenser and rotor. Spark plugs look good. I borrowed an inline light and it shows good spark. No change. Good idle. Can't throttle up. I am becoming an expert at removing this carb.

What is the fuel level in the float bowl?

Fuel level about 1-1/8"

1-1/8 from where? it is usually measured down from the mating surface.

I picked up a barbed hose fitting and clear hose. I'll verify tomorrow.

Is that too high?

I believe that it is low. The needle valve is supposed to close when the top of the float is at 1/4 inch. The top of the float will of course be higher than the level of the gas, but since your problem seems to be starvation for fuel when the throttle is opened and more air is entering, you need to lean towards having more gas available. You have told about trying adjustments to the main jet but have not mentioned the low speed jet which actually adjusts an air passage. If that is too far open you will have a lack of gas at low speed which upon throttling up could cause it to stumble.

Hey buddy. My 861 had the same problem after a carb rebuild. Turns out the gas tank filter was gummed up and the gas level was too low. It was sucking air. Could be as simple as filling up the tank above the filter or cleaning the filter off. Good luck.

What is a quartz window spark plug and what exactly does it do?
