Ford 800 rear main seal

Got my 860 running , but I have a oil leak at the rear of the engine. Oil is leaking between the backing plate and the rear of the block. It is motor oil and the pan gasket is good . It must be the rear main seal. Can the rear main seal be replaced by removing the pan and the rear crank cap or do I have to pull the engine ?

It could be leaking oil from camshaft cover at the back of the engine as another possible source. If it is the rear main, it can be done by dropping the pan and rear main cap, but the chances of actually repairing the leak seem slim. I went through this same exercise in 2013. The wedge seals in the sides of the rear main cap are the usual culprit. The original factory style were a fiber paper that would swell after installation and seal. I didn't have the patience to live with a leak to see how long it would take or if this style would even seal and went back in after ordering a rubber side seal with a metal pin that gets driven in. I could not get the pin driven in without bending it before getting it driven all the way in. I tried this style first laying on my back under the tractor, then pulled the engine and tried it with the engine on a stand upside down so I would be driving the pin down. Still bent the pins trying to drive them in. What worked for me was a Victor Reinz sealant that completely fills the side grooves in the cap.

Whut he said..

I brought a 850 it was a leaker as bad as I did not want to do it I dropped the pan and replaced the rear seal, the best I could tell the engine had been rebuilt. It had a Ford seal I did not see anything wrong with the seal are instillation I went back with the Victor Reinz deal it was a fix...

When I built my ford 390 engine it came with the rubber/pin side seals I used them I liked to never got it sealed up I ended up applying Good RTV to the side seals to get it to seal up.. I will never use them again...

If you go to the search bar modern view hit (search) top of page keyword (main), author (Hobo,NC) forum (Ford) you will get 57 hits on the subject. Some from me some from others...

Before attempting to replace the rear crankshaft seal VERIFY that it is not the pan/block interface and/or the rear main bearing cap inserts.

You MUST remove the pan and thoroughly clean the area to do this.
