Ford 4610 temp, fuel gauge not working

I have early 80s 4610, i havent seen the temp gauge move in awhile, and the fuel gauge never reads right, any info what to look for? Is there sending units that go bad? I dont have a manual for this tractor, thanks for any advice.

Temp sending units are pretty reliable, more so than fuel level. You can take the wires off of the respective sending units and ground them, which should make the gauges peg full right, whereas a disconnected wire should show full left.

If it passes those tests, you can pull the fuel level sender out and connect it with a jumper wire and then watch the gauge while you move the float arm up and down. With regards to the temp, possibly your thermostat is stuck wide open and the engine is simply not warming up.

Thanks, im gonna bring the tractor home for the winter to do some things to it, i blew the radiator out really good a few years go, and seems after that temp gauge dosent move, i know the wire is hooked up, fuel gauge is nice but not as important as temp gauge! Id also maybe like to paint the hood and finally get a rollbar and canopy on it.

I was running my tractor today, what the fuel gauge is doing, with the tank 3/4s full, the needle goes from full, flutters there, then back to empty, back and forth very fast! Any idea what to look for thats wrong? Bad ground, ect.

Either a bad connection somewhere or else a bad sending unit. To troubleshoot, remove the dash screws and the tach cable from the back of the dash and pull it out as far as you can with all of the wiring still attached. With the key on and engine off, watch the gauge as you wiggle the wiring. If the problem is related to the wiring, you should be able to determine it right then and there.

If that test comes up inconclusive, remove the fuel sending unit from the tank and extend the wiring to it with two jumper wires (one is ground). Watch the gauge carefully as you manually raise and lower the float arm. The gauge should respond smoothly to your movements.

If the ground to the dash was bad, your temp gauge should be acting the same as the fuel.

Thanks, ill start with the wiring first, i dont want to get into pulling the unit out of the tank right now, seems like very little room around there.

New instrument clusters can be had for 80 bucks with free shipping. If YT doesn't have them, ebay does. I have purchased several with both left and right tach rotation, corresponding to generator and alternator drives.
