I have a 1984 Ford 6610 diesel 4WD with Hi/Lo range. The fuel gauge and temp. gauge peg to the right when the lights are turned on (engine off), and also whenever I start the engine. Removing the cluster illumination lamps from their mounting (ground bar) solves the problem when the lights are turned on. I suspect a weak ground for the instrument cluster. One ground wire from the cluster seems to tie to the 4WD switch and other to the Hi/Lo range switch. Does anyone know where these ground wires find ground on the chassis? There is too much loom and tape to trace them out visually. Any suggestions on how to approach this situation?

I did connect a temporary ground to the frame and the gauges worked fine. But that ground wire got very hot. It was a lighter gauge wire that I used. But I wondered if too many other things might be grounding back to the cluster without the OEM ground wire(s) working properly. This got a little out of my league at that point!

Sounds to me like you have a short circuit somewhere in your harness. That kind of power shouldn't be coming from your instrument cluster because it should have blown the 3-amp instrument circuit fuse. I would suggest inspecting your harnesses closely for any evidence of rubbing or melting. Peel back any protective loom if you have to if your initial inspection turns up blank.

I think that the only machine ground for the harness is on the back of the alternator. Since it is a push on connector, make sure it is a
snug fit by pulling it off and making sure it takes some force to put it back on.
