850 things to check out

Good morning to all,
I am going to look at an 850 near me and I was wondering what I should be on the look out for on this model specifically. I am done haying and sold of all my equipment so now I need something smaller to do a little brush hogging and blade work so I decided I wanted an 850 like Dad had when I was a kid.

Some of these tractors had loaders and front ends are a weak point. Check for wear in the pivot pin area, radius arms, and spindles. Some
will jump out of third gear with heavy use although I have not encountered any with this problem. Occasionally you can find one with power
steering but not often. Check rear rims for rust. Many of these had fluid in the rear tires and rims will rust over the years. If it has
power adjust rear wheels those rims are spendy to replace.

Thanks so much, I can imagine that the front ends would take a beating with a FEL. Good stuff to keep in mind. Dad's would jump out of fifth gear when you started down a hill if you didn't hold it in.

These days, most will jump out of third with an overhauling load. One would need to be very badly worn to jump out with a non overhauling load.

Power adjust rimis to replace badly rusted ones are very hard to find and expensive.

Why not look for an 860? Looks same as an 850, has live PTO, and probably costs no more.
