Hello everybody. After a break for hay season I'm back to fighting with the steering on this 3600. All components have be rebuilt or replaced but it still is almost to turn steering wheel. Thought maybe I had hooked up lines to p/s cylinders wrong but I think they're ok. With front end jacked up and engine off it turns easily. With engine running almost impossible to turn wheel. Must have done something wrong with the hydraulics. Any suggestions on where to start? Thanks in advance for the help

Jack up the front end and disconnect the rod ends of the cylinders so they can move freely and then start the engine and turn the steerign wheel in both directions and watch the cylinders to see if they are moving in the proper directions for each way you turn the wheel. They should move opposite one another, one should extend while the other retracts and vice versa. Then look at the drag links and be sure the rods on the cylinders are moving in the proper direction to assist the movement of the links.

Sean thanks for the help. Somehow I did have lines on one side switched. It's better but still too hard to steer. Left turn is more difficult. Takes both hands to turn to full stop. Where do I look next? Thanks again MHG

You say "all components have been rebuilt or replaced". Who rebuilt the steering gear (steering column with control valve)? Did they follow the proper procedure on tightening down the large nut, backing it off whatever fraction of a turn it is supposed to be backed off and then staking it in place?

Hi Sean. This has been a 2+ year project with long breaks for health issuses and other work. I thought everything was done by the shop manual. I'm now going back to check. You're thinking the nut holding crush washer may be out of adjustment? Maybe too tight? Thanks for the help MHG

The steering column needs to rise slightly when you turn the steering wheel in one direction and fall slightly when turning in the other. It is a very small amount of up-and-down movement, but it is necessary for the proper functioning of the control valve.
