Pinball 901 governor

In post below the statement was made that
you have had several 900-901 and governor
didn't work good on any of them. I
noticed that on my 950 and 951. Gotta
give 'em a little throttle on hills when
baling because it wont rev up on it's
own. Any idea why? Flaw in design? Wore
out? Needs adjusting? Ideas?

Good or not good is all relative of course. Compared to my Oliver 70, I don't think that the Ford governors respond as well. Many years ago I put new balls in the governor of my 960 which I use only for pulling competitions but I didn't notice any difference. Ten years later when rebuilding the engine of my 901 which always needed a little more gas going upgrade, say while raking, I checked everything out closely and found no problems. I think that it is just how they are.

Well, what is "good"? All tractors droop under load, that's what they're supposed to do. The governor design on tractors and heavy construction equipment is different than that used on a generator; a generator needs to maintain a constant speed while that's not particularly desirable on a tractor. Detroit Diesel governors used to be marked as "CS" (constant speed) or "VS" (variable speed) depending on their intended use.

As long as your engine doesn't peg the tach when you open the throttle under no load, the governor is probably OK.
