981/4000 on baler

Has anyone tried to use a 901 series or 4 cylinder 4000 on a Vermeer Rebel 5400, 5410, 5420 round baler? Some of the literature claims they need 40hp to run. I know tractor weight matters also. Will these tractors successfully run a round baler?

Supposedly the Vermeer Rebel 5400 series take less hp than the Deere balers? Be nice to put up hay with these tractors but not sure how many small square bales I want to handle. Although there is more profit in the small squares IF you can get them baled and stored without rain on the hay. Round are ok as long as you get them rolled up before the rain hits. Finish baling and it rains 10 minutes later you're ok. Pickup the bales when the field dries enough. Squares have to be baled and stored under cover before the rain.

How well I know! We have done 1500+ square bales this year with our Fords. Great fun and folks always stopping to watch. Got 2 900s a 901 and a 640. Big demand for square bales.....no one does them much in Alabama. We sell them as fast as we make them. Maybe the dealer will let you test a baler?

What square balers are you running on your 900's? I used to put up hay with a round baler. JD 535 and a 4440 that I owned about 18-20 years ago. I had a 150 acres of alfalfa in one field. I could cut about 100 acres in a day and finish the rest the next day. I could round bale the entire field in one day. Usually tried to start at night after the dew set on the hay. Sometimes bale all night and finish sometime the next morning.

Those Vermeers, and many other Vermeer balers, were designed to be run by smaller tractors by slowing the baler down. You can't run as fast as when baling with other balers and larger tractors, but you can get the job done. If you're on hilly ground, I suspect you'll have weight issues. You don't want the tail wagging the dog, so to speak. If you are on flat ground, and assuming the tractor has the hydraulic capacity to operate the baler, it should work ok. Personally, I think you'd be better off with a 4x4 baler.
