my tractor quit. when checking voltages it looks as those my condenser is bad. no spark at all at plugs.
bought a complete tune up kit. install new points--set at .020, installed new condenser. cap and rotor. i
dont think as long as the clips are lined up and snap in correctly you can get your distributor cap on
wrong. correct me if im wrong. put on new wire from coil. havent installed new wires or plugs yet. wanted
to see if it would run. took plug out nearest radiator. got fire now. tried to start. darn no start.
suspect i messed the wires all up so can one tell me the firing order and where does the no one wire go or
maybe if you have a photo it would help. i thought the firing order was 1-2-4-3. sure could use some input.
getting gas okay. thanks for reading.

New points may have a greasy film on them. Gotta clean them good. $20 bill folded up and pulled through a few times may do it. Worst case a file and the the $20.

(quoted from post at 23:10:32 09/06/20) So that's what I've been doing wrong, I need to quit being so cheap! Lol

With a name like Hamilton I would have thought that you would be using a $10.

i bought this kit off eBay. oriellys wanted 34 bucks just for the points and condenser so I just decided to buy the complete kit. what threw me off was there is a number one on the distributer cap. wouldn't start. finally after all the mistakes i did sit down and got thinking where i pulled the old wires off the distributor. went ahead and put new wires and plugs in it and hooked the wires back on but didn't use the no 1 on the cap . it fired right up. took it out for a spin and when i went up a step hill it it was running 900 rpm and 500 when i got to the top. down. so i swapped 3 and 4 wires and the 900 went down to 800. went to start it late this afternoon and all is fine. pretty responsive when i give it more gas. don't think my governor is working right but this is the 3rd 960 I've had and none of them did. thanks fr the help.

You most have had a poor service person I buy points at O'Reilly's for less then $10 oh and if your where not some one I knew I would not have even posted since it is rare I post on the Ford forums any more

I always note the plug wire position and order when I remove them so I know I get them back in the correct place. Who knows how many different engines a particular distributor cap might be the "right one" for in terms of fit and functionality, and how many of them would have their number one plug wire in the same place, especially if the distributor has been replaced or removed and reinstalled, unless the distributor is keyed and can only go in one way, which is the case for some, but not all.
