Another one followed me today

1957 860. Bought it on an on-line auction only to find out it has what sounds like a stuck or burnt exhaust valve. Tomorrow's job - compression check & possibly pull the head!
Rear tires are very good, fronts very poor. Has a single remote.

5 spd trans with live pto, power adjust rears with the spacers, hydraulic remote, lots of potential there.
Did all of the hundred series have flat foot boards, I was thinking that was only on the early models.

(quoted from post at 18:13:48 09/04/20) Only the 1955 hundred series had the flat running boards, the flat boards were a one year only feature.

Thought I'd read that before but was a little confused when I read 57 model and seen the flat foot board.

Footboards do not appear to be the flat 55 version. Appears to be an optical delusion.

Fenders are 56-7 versions.

Darn Dean. I would of never picked that up if you didn't mention it. After squinting a couple times and taking a good look, it does look like the front of that foot board does angle up. Good eye!

When I blow the picture up, the right side one appears flat to me too.
A picture of the left side one would ID it better.
Or the serial number, of course.

Serial number only ID's the year of the tractor the transmission was in when it left the factory. Would need date codes form all of the major components to obtain a consensus.

Good news (for once!)! Compression was 100, 100, 0, 100, so pulled the valve cover & found #3 exhaust valve push rod stuck on the edge of the cup instead of down in the middle! Pushed it back in & had 100# compression. Starts & runs good now!
Any idea what would have caused the push rod to slip out of the cup anyone???

"Any idea what would have caused the push rod to slip out of the cup anyone???"

The engine sets around for a while with that valve open. Start engine, valve sticks, pushrod descends, rocker arm does not follow, pushrod falls to the side and then rises hitting the rocker arm with the side of the cup, breaks valve loose, spring tension holds pushrod against rocker arm. Likely happened when you started it. Change of oil, maybe some 'Marvel Mystery Oil' added, take it on a nice ride, it's unlikely problem will reoccur.

Makes sense to me. It was running this way when I bought it, so I have no knowledge of it's history.
Thanks!
