Ford 300 Straight Six in Tractor 6000/7000 Commander

I was wondering if anyone has attempted to put a 300
Straight six engine in a ford tractor. I have read it has been
done with the 6000/7000 Ford commander tractors sense
they came factory with the 223 gas engine and some of the
bolt patterns And dimensions are close to the same. Has
anyone done this swap If so I would love your i put. I have
always wanted to attempt it. Thanks

I think you will find a 262 six to be a much easier swap. It is a bigger version of the 223 and was available in some trucks to maybe 1964. I am thinking the cams may interchange which would allow you to keep the power down low for tractor use.

As a note of caution: Years ago the local Ford dealer got involved in tractor pulling. I don't recall what model they used (not a 6000) however it did have the SOS transmission. The tractor made good power however the transmission would "dis-engage" as the RPM's came up. They never did figure out the problem and dropped the pulling effort. I have puzzled about that over the years. Perhaps the pump inlet is restricted resulting in cavitation at higher RPM....?

I would be intersted in following what you are doing if you would keep me informed.

I was poking around under the hood the other day of a '59 Edsel, and was surprised to see the similarities in the engines. I strongly suspect you could in fact make the swap. Let us know how it goes if you try it.

By the way, there's no such thing as a 7000 Commander, only a 6000, built in '65 and '66.

Oops, I misread your post. You were asking about installing a 300. I don't know about that. I would think all bets are off on that deal.

Yes you are Correct there is only a 6000 Commander I dont know why I thought there was a 7000 version. I am almost positive I have seen a 300 straight six in a Ford tractor on this site but I can not remember what model or anything it was. It may have just been a pulling tractor but I was thinking it was a farm use tractor with 3 point hitch etc. thats been several years ago when I seen it. I was just told by several people if they was going to attempt it the 6000 Commander would be their choice sense they came factory with a 223 Straight gas engine. I have no clue if there is enough similar things in common with the two engines that it is even remotely possibly but thats what Im trying to figure out. I know anything is possible but I want it to be a some what doable task with out a lot of crazy fabrication work. I realize it wouldnt be the most practical tractor and would be a gas hog but for some reason I have always wanted to attempt it because I have always felt that should have been an engine option for some of the ford tractors but it never was.

A friend transplanted a 300 six into an Oliver 70. They had to grind a little of the tub away to accommodate the back of the engine. Of course the separation of motor and transmission in the Oliver are a completely different ball game, but they didn't have to do much. The clutch wasn't up to the additional power so they couldn't pull on a really sticky track.
