The '81' in the 981 refers to the Select-o-Speed transmission with the two speed and ground driven PTO. The transmission has 10 forward and two reverse gearings. So all 981's have a SOS transmission.

If you're asking how many were built, if anyone knows I'm sure they will chime in here as soon as they see this. I have no idea.

I suspect the '81' transmission is less common than the '71' which is a SOS transmission with a single speed PTO, the rest of the gearing being the same.

981s were SOS, so were the 971s.
But, the 941 was a 4 speed and the 951 and 961 were 5 speeds.
All are in the 901 series of tractors.
