I have recently found that the tractor I am currently working on is a 4500 Ford early to mid 1960's era. I was working on it with the idea that it was a 3400 Ford diesel. After many failed attempts at rebuilding the cav pump, I decided to bite the bullet and order a new one. Unfortunately I ordered a cav pump for a 3400. I also ordered new injectors and installed them, but they work for either the 3400 or 4500 so fuel pump is my issue. [After about 5 years of sitting in an open field, the tractor started and, with a little coaxing, might be able to move closer to the house making it easier to work on.]
The problem I am working on is what to do with the fuel pump. The numbers on the original pump (DPA 323 2978 and serial #18311ZH) are hard to find a replacement .
I was also thinking that the installed pump, which I know is wrong but runs the tractor, might be adjusted to work.
The idle and the fuel pump linkage seem to be the issues. The numbers on new pump I purchased are DPAM 3833F380 and serial #4986YN (made in Romania). I think this might have to be done making adjustments in the governor of the pump, and adapting this one might be easier than trying to exchange it with the vendor from whom I purchased it over a month ago.
The other option I thought of was to have the original pump rebuilt at a pump shop or by myself. I have tried to rebuild it, but I would need more parts than the rebuild kit offers. It got extremely hard with my limited experience, but I enjoy a challenge. Any words of advice or help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Larry
