Abandoning 4140 HD Industrial

Last fall I bought a running 4140 HD Industrial. 1972 model. Four cylinder 172 Gas. 12V negative ground. Oil pressure was 40. I intended on doing lots of repair and painting, but am now abandoning the project. While mowing, the PTO broke out, the water pump broke down and it overheated.

Now looking for someone who wants it for a parts tractor. What Ive done so far.
1) Took the radiator to a shop that says it is not worth the repair.
2) The alternator and starter have been rebuilt.
3) Installed new PTO end cap with snap ring.
4) Pulled the head off. All valves look good, but were sloppy in the guides. ValveS and seats look good. Cylinder walls look good. Still the original 3.9 bore. The cylinders are bored in the block, no replaceable sleeves.
6) Dropped oil pan. Was all clean inside.
5) Bought a new water pump, but will return it.
Front 3-rib tires are new. Back tires have only 10% tread. But I do have chains on them.

I plan to put everything back together loosely, meaning no gaskets or torquing. All fluids are drained. Needs to be hauled from northwest Illinois.

You sure it's not a 1962? The tractor you describe was only built for two or three years from 1962 - 1964.

How much are you asking for it? What transmission does it have?

Yes, it is 1962. Poor typing. Transmission is 4-speed with Sherman forward/backward shifter. Model #4141S. Serial 7179.
Ford loader model 19132. SN4257. I also bought forks for the loader. Have the original Owners Manual.

Last month while it was still running, I rebuilt the Marvel Schebler carb with a full kiteverything brass, including the float. It ran fine. Started up in seconds.

What do I want for it? Ive assumed someone might want to part it out, but I was going to fix it up for myself. It is not junk. Nice project to restore a running tractor. I wont be a dreamer, but I paid $2000 for it. New tire chains are about $700 each. Now has new starter and alternator. Im not sure how to price it. I could list it on eBay.

The problem is that you bought a running tractor. No matter how much you've spent on parts and upgrades; it's now a non-running tractor.

Most non-running tractors of that ilk, and with rear tires no better than 10% will sell for around $500.00. The loader may add some, but it would need to be seen.

As Larry says.. but if your williing to part it out... you can make money back... the loader will sell for $1500 to 2000 if in good shape

good rims and rear tires$300 to even $750 pending condition... front rims and tires $100 each.... trans on a pallet$500 Short block on pallet$500 Power steering system...$300 to 500. rear fenders $90 to 150 each. Sheet metal hood and grill, $150..hydraulic controls if on tractor...$300 to 650. Steering box, etc etc...

I personally dont want the ""junk"" around and try to avoid doing this, but many folks with the new world internet... at your door and plenty of time on your hands... have you priced the factory loader cylinders for that tractor???

Abandoning.
Interesting way to phrase it.
In WWII after many months of getting
their butts kicked in and around the
Solomon Islands the Japanese realized
they couldn't afford to continue a war of
attrition and the US could.
So they pulled out and quit.
But they couldn't admit they had been
defeated.
So they said they would continue
attacking in a new direction.
Just wondering what, if anything, you
will attack next.
This is not meant to impugne or belittle.
Just wondering what, if any, your next
project will be.

In reply to Ultradog: We moved to new acreage last fall, and the barns are in poor repair, so there is plenty to do. Plus, I read a lot.

My other tractor (that I hoped to replace with the 4000) is an NAA. I keep it in good repair, but the FEL is always a disappointment. Trip bucket, and it only lifts about 600 pounds. But it has hauled a lot of logs, and you should see it push deep snow with an 8-foot wide V plow. Has wheel weights, fluid in tires, and rear counterweight, so its heavy enough to do so.

Larry is right, 4140 was last built in 1964 so either you have the wrong model or wrong year. What is the serial number? My buddy has a '63 4140 and knows all about them. Send me your email and I can put you two in touch with each other -perhaps he can help you. We're in Michigan.

Thanks, Tim, for the offer to make a connection to a fellow owner. The goal it the moment is not to find out more about the 4140, but to find someone who wants it as is. As Larry pointed out, it is a pile of parts. Peter
