1963/64 Ford 2000 4cyl engine miss

my 1963/64 ford 200 4 cyl started missing a couple of days ago. it all started when i tried to start is one morning and i heard something sharp while cranking. the engine started and had a cylinder miss. i checked the cylinders by pulling each wire until i found the suspect cylinder. i then checked for spark and even swapped plugs with a known good cylinder but the miss stayed put. i can hear a definite miss in the exhaust and nothing at the carb. i think it may have stuck a valve and got tagged by the piston. is that possible??? can i remove the valve cover without removing the gas tank and hood?

You can get the valve cover off but if it bent a push rod you will need to remove the hood and gas tank. You should also check for a broken or weak valve spring. I recently worked on a NAA that had a weak valve spring so that turning it over by hand every seemed to be working as it should. With the engine running the valve would not close fast enough.

great thanks. yes i suspect a weak broken spring or a broken rocker or could be a bent push rod. i would like to be able to stat the engine with the valve cove removed. and would like a quick investigation to see if the problem is obvious so i can plan out the disassembly for a later date.

i am hoping i don't need to remove the head.

i took the valve cover off today and i have a bent push rod on one valve. not bent to bad but definitely bent. where can i get another push rod??? also looks like the valve stem seals are all riding high up on the valve stem. i got them to slide but they were pretty stuck to the stem. do they just push down over the valve guide? or is there a keeper of some sort?
