How much play should the rear axil shafts have when they are off the tractor but still in the axle tube, mine has about 1/2 to 1" of play. I have to replace the pinion bearings and need to split the tractor. I am unsure if the pinion bearings went bad from to much play in the ring gear/axle shafts, low fluid or to much play in the pinion gear. The pinion gear does move back and forth a little but the front bearing is bad(it Ripped the top and sides off of it but left all the bearings in it). also the ring gear cluster does look like it was hot at one time. Thank you for any help you can give.

There should be no end play in the axle shafts. The spec actually calls for a little bit of preload.

If you really do have the kind of play you're talking about, it's pretty safe to say that the oil leaked out a long time ago, which is why your pinion bearings are out as well. In normal operation, that rear axle is tough as nails.

Sounds like you have a bit of a mess on your hands.

I noticed a little play when I removed the axle tube and reached in and moved the axle to see if there was any play on the inside and there was but none on the wheel stud side. I guess I need to see what is destroyed inside the axle tubes.

If you were talking about the inner axle shafts that spline into the differential, then yes, a lot of end play like that is normal when they are out in the open.
