Wondering about rebuilding the 172, 4-cylinder gas engine in a 4140, but this can be very pricey. There is so much blow-by, I think it has broken rings. Now I see an working engine for sale on eBay. The description is:
This is a block from an "860" Ford tractor we parted out. It should fit Ford 800, 801, 860, 900, 901, 960 and 4000 tractors. Part no. EAF 6015-172 engine. It still has sleeves to remove so you can install new sleeves and pistons.

Could I just drop this engine into my 4000? Thanks for your expertise.

I agree with you. I could have quoted more from the seller who is parting it out (a tractor junk yard). He wrote: Tractor started right up. Engine sounded good. He is only an hour from me, so I can go see it and talk to him.

But my question was About the swap. He took it from an 860 and Im wanting it for a 4000. Same engine if it is a 172 gas? Presumably I could just bolt it in?
