800 Engine Drain Plug

A square plug rounded off? Wow, what kind of abuse might have done that? Anyway, use a pipe wrench, or whatever you need to. Its just a drain plug, and you cant make it any worse that it is.

This topic comes up a lot. The first thing you should do is buy a replacement plug so when you get yours out you don't need to reuse it. I don't see the part on this site, but Steiner does carry them; part number FDS246. 28 bucks.

There are a lot of tricks folks have used to get these plugs out; obviously the worse shape the plug is in the more drastic the methods. I used a large pipe wrench to get mine out.

I just use a good quality crescent wrench on my 8n. My prior 8n plug was rounded off by the previous owner. I just brazed a 1/2" nut on the square and used a 3/4" socket.

Actually, it's not "just a drain plug" and you CAN make it worse.

The problem usually starts when someone
puts the plug back in without the gasket,
and then over tightens it to try to stop
it from leaking.

(quoted from post at 06:35:59 07/13/20) Engine oil drain plug is getting close to being rounded off. I think it's 1 1/16 square, do you guys just
use a open ended wrench or is there some sort of other wrench I need to be using?

When ordering the new plug order two new gaskets so that when it is time for the second oil change on the new plug you don't need to put a pipe on your wrench in oder to seal it and stop the drip. This saves you from rounding the plug getting it off on your third change.

Assuming you will pop for the new drain plug, be aware that 8 point sockets are available for square nuts.
