Help connecting 3pt auger to Ford 860 PTO

WV860

New User
Have a 1955 Ford 860 & a 3pt auger. It has a driveshaft connected to the gearbox that terminates with square steel tube. Question, what would need to complete the connection?

Also, would a clutch protect the PTO shaft?

Also, as you can tell, Im new to tractors. Just looking to keep up the tradition on my wifes family farm.

nother, larger square tube with s u-joint (to fit tractor pto splines) which slides over the existing tube, assuming that existing tube has u-joint at gear box.

Id like to run a clutch to protect the PTO output shaft. Not sure what to use (style & size)?

To affirm what Jmor said but in different
words, you need the other/front half of
the driveline. If you mean do you need an
over running clutch to use an auger, no
you do not. Your 860 has live PTO so you
don't need an over running clutch for any
implement.

Gotcha, thx for the post. Being new makes it challenging to say the least.

You need a square shaft that slides into the tube connected by a universal joint to a PTO coupler. Pretty much all farm supply stores have a display of PTO shafts and parts. There are just a few different types on many different implements.

If the phd was already there, look for the front half of the pto shaft.

measure the shaft dimensions so see what a front half cost. ie the shaft could be 3/4" by 1" rectangular,, or 1'x1' square. the front shaft can slide over if the rear shaft is solid,, or if the rear shaft is hollow, the front shaft can slide inside. That will help you know what your looking for.

If not, remember you can buy a whole pto shaft for a phd for around $150 + or - delivered, off of ebay, so dont go to a farm store and pay 350 for a half shaft. (https://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Post-Hole-Digger-PTO-Shaft-Heavy-Duty-Series-4-1-1-4-Smooth-Bore-Yoke/261865878952?hash=item3cf86c35a8:g:F8sAAOSwBahVO6hA) but you have to match up where the shaft comes out of the gear box. Most phd's have the same size input shaft.

Secondly... remember.. a phd is about the only implement that you use on the tractor.... that the pto speed should be just above an idle... That way if it hits a root, water pipe, it will kill the engine. Otherwise... it will screw itself into the ground, with the roots holding it,, and you will be three weeks digging it back out. Lots of new diggers have a max tractor rpm of 1000 on them. about everything else off the pto, the tractor must be at pto speed for them to work.

Hope you find the other half of the shaft.
