Someone educate me on the 900-901 front
pedestals. Are they supposed to
different?

My guess would be option for single front or wide front along with dual wheel. Other mfgs had same options prior to Fords offering. Some things Ford was behind on and others they were ahead.

If I'm following you... I think the early 7/900s only came with NF. Late 7/900s and all the rest of the 4 cyl RCs could have WF, dual NF and Single front wheel.

Your 901 has a two piece bolster/front end.
You can unbolt the narrow front and bolt on a wide front fairly easily.
The very late 900's had them too, but the earlier ones are one piece.
If you want to put a wide front (or single wheel) on the 900,
the only way I know to do it is to change the bolster.
The 901 bolster will fit on the 900.

if you're talking about the bolt holes, they dropped them in 1957 according to the parts book
