Drilling for Dahlias

Ford 2000; 3 cyl. Diesel; 8/2 trans.....In an effort to promote marital bliss, I have been digging up ground for a large dahlia bed for my spousal unit. Hard, rocky digging so far, lots of fist size rocks, some larger. I was thinking this was a great opportunity to use my new-to-me auger to drill several holes in the bed so I can dig more easily with a shovel. I've not used the auger before so am wondering if I drop it to the ground and then turn on the pto or turn it on before contacting the ground? I have some 'starter' holes that I can set the auger in so it doesn't dance around. And, I'd try to take small bites at a time, lifting the auger so it doesn't drill itself into the ground. Does the pto work best at 540 rpm's or can I go slower with the auger?

I'd appreciate any insight you can share. Thanks.

Absolutely positively stay on the seat, start it from the seat, stop it before you get off the seat. My FIL was killed by his auger on his Ford 2000. Will never forget that day. Detective surmised that he was standing next to the auger while it was just starting. It hit a rock, bounced out and proceeded to "walk" around the hole, snagging his coverall's, wrapping him up around the bit. Stay on the seat.
